La carrière professionnelle de Markus Aerne a été dès le début orientée dans le domaine technique : après une formation comme serrurier sur machine, il fut monteur à l’étranger pour une centrale électrique à turbines à gaz et des sous-stations électriques en Jordanie et Arabie Saoudite, serrurier et mécanicien sur engins de terrassement et camions. De 1988 à 2000, Markus Aerne travailla chez Swissair Technics, devint Certifying Engineer sur DC-10, B747, A-310 et MD-11, famille A-320, A-330, A-340-200/300 et 500/600. Durant cette période il fut mandaté pour un grand nombre d’interventions et de réparations d’avions au niveau mondial. Dès 2001, Markus Aerne travailla comme assistant technique, Groundtime Manager et CI Coordinator chez SRTechnics.
